Digital Transformation of PVT Data Processing for Stratum Reservoir

Client Overview

Stratum Reservoir, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, is a global leader in reservoir characterization and PVT (Pressure-Volume-Temperature) analysis for the oil and gas industry. The company supports major energy producers with laboratory testing, data interpretation, and advanced modeling to optimize field development decisions across global operations.

Project Background

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

In 2020, Loosely Coupled Technologies (LCT) partnered with Stratum Reservoir to design and implement a digital system capable of automating complex PVT laboratory calculations, simulations, and reporting.
The engagement evolved across two major phases:

  • Phase 1 (Sep 2020 – Jun 2021): Core development of the PVT Calculator for oil and gas sample analysis.
  • Phase 2 (Nov 2021 – Nov 2022): Advanced feature expansion, including ADNOC system integration, OBM correction, and gas condensate test workflows.

Challenge

PVT data analysis is fundamental to reservoir engineering, but the process was traditionally manual, time-consuming, and prone to inconsistencies.
Stratum Reservoir’s global laboratories faced several key challenges:

  • High complexity of multi-test PVT workflows (Flash, CCE, Viscosity, Differential Liberation, and Separation tests).
  • Inconsistent reporting formats across regions.
  • Need for automated comparison and quality checks between multiple samples.
  • Limited digital infrastructure for standardized data transfer and reporting.

The goal was to digitally standardize PVT data processing and automate analytical workflows while complying with strict data access and quality policies.

Solution Implemented

Phase 1 — PVT Calculator Development

LCT built a comprehensive digital PVT Calculator capable of handling the full analytical lifecycle — from raw data input to final report generation.

Key Features and Technologies

  • Backend: Linux Server, Node.js for server-side image/graph generation embedded in MS Word reports.
  • Frontend: AngularJS + Custom Framework for real-time graph visualization and regression modeling.
  • Data Storage: Encrypted on-device flat file system (to meet data governance policies).
  • Core Functionality:
    • Standardized calculations for Flash, CCE, Viscosity, Differential Liberation, and Separation Tests.
    • Automated normalization, mass balance adjustment, and quality check comparison between multiple samples.
    • Excel export module for simulation and reporting.

Outcomes

  • Reduced PVT reporting time from days to hours.
  • Standardized digital reporting and data storage.
  • Prevented quality incidents through automated checks.
  • Enabled global use with on-device portability and zero dependency on lab-specific systems.

Phase 2 — Integration, Expansion, and Advanced Testing

Building on the Phase 1 foundation, Phase 2 introduced advanced capabilities and integration features.

Enhancements Delivered

  • Integration with ADNOC Data Submission Portal:
Direct export of PVT results in ADNOC’s required Excel format, enabling seamless regulatory data upload.
  • OBM (Oil-Based Mud) Impurity Correction:
Added calculations within Flash Test workflows for impurity adjustment and accuracy improvement.
  • Gas Condensate Testing Workflows:
Implementation of Gas CCE and Gas CVD workflows for condensate reservoirs.
  • Regional Workflow Customization:
Adapted Norway-specific processes with fixed component sets for Flash, Differential Liberation, and Separation tests.
  • Hosting & Maintenance:
Deployment of back-end environments and retainer-based enhancement support under AMC service agreements.

Results and Impact

  • Process Efficiency: Reduced manual effort and reporting cycles across global laboratories.
  • Standardization: Unified reporting formats and calculation logic across regional branches.
  • Integration Readiness: Full compatibility with ADNOC and other regional submission systems.
  • Quality Control: Automated mass balance checks and inter-sample comparison improved data reliability.
  • Global Accessibility: Secure on-device system architecture ensured cross-border usability under strict data access controls.

Together, both project phases transformed PVT data handling from a semi-manual, lab-dependent workflow into a digitally standardized, automated, and globally deployable system.

Client Endorsement

“LCT Team is flexible and dynamic. We are satisfied with the project delivery. We strongly recommend them for projects with complex engineering calculations, regression, and data visualization with a high degree of complexity.”
Bashar Qassim, Senior Technical Advisor, MEA, Stratum Reservoir

Conclusion

Through two successful phases of collaboration, Loosely Coupled Technologies delivered a world-class engineering solution that redefined how PVT data is processed, validated, and reported.
The PVT Calculator Platform now serves as a benchmark for digital excellence in reservoir engineering — combining data science, automation, and rigorous quality standards to power global laboratory operations for Stratum Reservoir.
